Maine Coons

Thank you for your interest in our Maine Coons! We are a small, in-home cattery and our Coons will come home ready to hit the ground running! We were introduced to this very special breed through a close family friend. We started working with a local Maine Coon breeder, and she has fully embraced us as a partner in bettering our amazing breed. We have been shocked at how playful and confident these special cats really are. They are very social by nature and fit well into large, active families of all ages and also enjoy having dogs, cats, or other animals around. We won’t deny though that they can be quite mischievous… We cannot wait for you to experience this amazing cat in person!

Maine Coons are known for their gentle, playful temperaments and their large size. They are one of the largest cat breeds, with males getting upwards of 20 pounds and females up to 15 pounds. They were developed as a working cat, able to fend for themselves in rough terrain and extreme climate. Maine Coons come in a wide range of colors and patterns from your classic tabby to silver or even solid versions. They are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America originating in the state of Maine (which they are the official state cat!). They can be polydactyl, meaning they can have six toes. It is believed that this could have been beneficial to have “natural snowshoes” during snowy Maine winters! Some fun facts you may not know:

  • Maine Coons often love water! Ours are always trying to jump into the bathtub with the kids or sneak into the shower!
  • Maine Coons will often chirp or trill rather than meow! It’s essentially like a mixture of a meow and a purr together. They chirp when they see a bird outside, when they’re happy to see you, and when it is time for dinner!
  • A wide-spread myth is that Maine Coons originated through wild cats and raccoons! While Maine Coons may have a bushy tail and a raccoon-like tabby coloring, this type of cross is not biologically possible 🙂

Health and Care

Health, grooming, nutrition info here

Maine Coons are predisposed to some health conditions. One of these is HCM, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This can be tested for physically with an echocardiogram or genetically (although it is believed there are many genes involved in this disease). As such, we do echos on our cats before they are bred and periodically throughout their lives, and only breed cats that are negative for the known HCM mutation (A31P). We do a full genetic panel on our cats through Wisdom Panel which checks for genetic variants in 50 genes associated with health issues (including A31P). Only cats that are not at risk for passing genetic issues down to their kittens are maintained in our breeding program.

Our health guarantee – our kitten adoption contracts include a five year health guarantee for all 50 genetic risk factors that we test for. If one of our kittens develops ANY kind of health issue, please reach out to us right away! Our top priority is to produce healthy cats 100% of the time! While this is not possible every time, we promise to put forward our best effort to ensure everything is done in our power to keep our lines healthy. If an issue does arise, we will work through it together.

Maine Coons have semi-longhair, glossy coats that are heavy and water-resistant. Their coat is smooth and nearly maintenance-free; typically a weekly brush is all that is required to keep it in perfect condition.
